“Morton’s Pond” (I)

blurtso5154
Hello, said Pablo. Hello, said Morton. What are you doing at Walden Pond? I don’t know, said Morton. You don’t know? said Pablo. No, said Morton. Be careful you don’t get any deer ticks. Deer ticks? said Morton. Yes, said Pablo, spring is the season for deer ticks. Oh, said Morton. Where are the other students? said Pablo. Glouster is in Boston with the ducks at Longfellow bridge, Chelsea is at Emma Lou’s house, Frank is living in the Concord cemetery, and the moose just vanished. Do you have any plans for the summer? No, said Morton, I can’t figure out what to do since the semester ended. Maybe you should spend the summer here. Here? said Morton. Sure, said Pablo. What could I do here? said Morton. You could look at things, said Pablo, and listen to things, and write about what you see and hear. Really? said Morton. Sure, said Pablo, just like Thoreau. Who? said Morton. Henry David Thoreau, said Pablo, a man who didn’t know what to do after he graduated from college, so he moved to Walden and wrote about what he saw and heard. That doesn’t sound very interesting, said Morton. Actually, said Pablo, he became famous. Really? said Morton, just because he didn’t know what to do after college?

“Pablo journeys to the greenhouse”

blurtso817

Over the hill and through the woods…

blurtso819

to my greenhouse I will go…

blurtso820

I’ll fill a wagon and return to our cabin…
where we’ll all live like H.D. Thoreau.

“Pablo anticipates the spring”

blurtso1001

I can hear the last train… the night animals will be out. Tomorrow I’ll see their tracks in the snow. It must be exciting, moving quietly, feeling the pulse in your temples, seeing the hills in the grey light, and hearing the slender sound of the creek…

blurtso1000

Maybe I should go for a walk.

blurtso1044

blurtso1045

The ice is melting… it will soon be spring.

blurtso1046

Pablo? What are you doing? Please come back to bed…

We’ll go skating when we get home, said Pablo.
Really? said Blurtso. With the ducks?!

blurtso1129

blurtso5237

Remarkable, thought Blurtso, how they stay in formation.

That was the best pumpkin pie I’ve ever eaten, said Blurtso. Yes, said Bonny, the Main Street Café is a fine café.

Welcome! said Bonny Bray. I’ve got a great evening planned! First we’ll go shopping, then we’ll eat dinner, then we can have cocoa at the Colonial Inn. I’ve booked a double room with an extra bale of hay!

Mmm, said Pablo. Mmmmm, said Bonny. Will you tell me a story? said Pablo. A story? said Bonny. Yes, said Pablo, a bedtime story about two donkeys that snuggle under the covers. Warm covers? said Bonny. Yes, said Pablo, very warm covers.
