“Tesserae” refers to the ancient technique of arranging colored pebbles to create a design, said the professor. By 200 B.C. pebbles were abandoned in favor of marble or limestone that was cut into small cubes. These were subsequently replaced by colored glass, to which gold leaf was added, sandwiched between the pieces, to produce a luminous effect.
